Beethoven
Movement IV
~In bar 654, there will be no rit. even though Michael will stop on the 3rd beat
~In bar 849, we will have reached the new tempo (of the “Prestissimo”)
~In bar 916, play “molto legato” starting at the pick-up to bar 917
~Stay FF and “big” right up until the last bar of the movement (“drive to the end”)
Movement II
~Bars 121, 175, 246, 304, 358, 651, 705, 834, and 888 will start “macro” conducting patterns in 2 (rather than the usual 4)
~In bar 491, celli don’t slow down
Movement I
~Softer doesn’t mean slower!
~There should be an immediate change of mood at bar 104
~Bars 507 and 508 should be tenuto on each chord
~Winds play more “marked” at bar 513
~In bar 527, horn/clarinet/oboe/flute should play a 16th note (as written) not a 32nd note at the end of the measure
~Bars 543 and 544 should be “full” quarter notes
Movement III
~“Feel the life within the subdivision”
~In bar 12, winds don’t cutoff until the strings enter
~Bar 17 is an “emotional peak”, but don’t diminuendo too quickly
~At bar 25, violas and 2nd violins play with more energy on the off-beats
~At bar 33, violas and 2nd violins play mezzo-piano
~Bar 41, third beat, needs to feel like “a moment”
~Be aware, at bar 42, Michael will subdivide
~1st violins, watch the rhythm on beat 3 of bar 58
~In bar 65, less volume on the horn pedal
~Beat 3 of bar 81 should be a “special moment”
~Be aware, at bar 82, Michael will subdivide
